Mohs Micrographic Surgery (Mohs) is the single most effective non-melanoma skin cancer removal technique and conserves the most amount of healthy skin possible, while removing cancer cells.
Dr. Jeffrey Ross Gunter, MD, FAAD is a surgeon specially trained in Mohs surgery, pathology and reconstructive surgery. First, the skin cancer tumor is marked with ink to guide the treatment. Under local anesthesia, Dr. Gunter removes the thinnest possible layer of visible cancerous tissue. A nurse or assistant bandages your wound and escorts you to the waiting area. Mohs is done in stages while you wait for lab results. The tumor is processed and prepared onto a microscope slide for examination. If Dr. Gunter finds any remaining cancer cells, the areas are pinpointed on the map, and you’re called back into the operating room to precisely remove another layer of tissue from the remaining cancer cells areas.
The team repeats this whole process until the margins are clear and cancer-free before closing the wound with stitches. Mohs surgeons are trained in reconstruction and closure techniques. Afterwards, the wound is bandaged, you’ll be given an antibiotic prescription for prevention of infection and wound care instructions— and you’re finished! By mapping the diseased tissue layer by layer, the most amount of healthy skin is conserved, ensuring the smallest scar, best cosmetic result and the highest cure rate of 98% or greater is achieved.
