The right way to wash your face… in 7 easy steps

Applying skin care products in the correct order.

Retinoids are vitamin A derivatives that treat acne and rosacea, but also is the gold standard for anti-aging. There are three prescription-strength retinoids: tretinoin (Atralin, Avita, Retin-A, Retin-A Micro, Renova), tazarotene (Avage, Tazorac), and adapalene (Differin).

As part of acne and rosacea treatment, Retin A works by increasing cell turnover and reducing pore-clogging debris that causes comedonal acne (blackheads, whiteheads). It clears up existing breakouts but also prevents future breakouts and helps keep skin clear as part of a personalized treatment system.

Increasing cell turnover and skin regeneration evens out skin discoloration, boosts collagen to reduce fine lines, and speed cell turnover to reverse signs of sun damage, even out skin discoloration, smooth away fine lines and wrinkles.

The most common normal side effect is mild to moderate skin irritation, such as redness, dryness, peeling, and flaking. Side effects are usually temporary and resolve once skin becomes adjusted. Follow the instructions below to ensure proper use.

  • Your medication can cause irritation; most people become more tolerant and have less irritation over time.
  • Start using 3 times a week AT NIGHT for the first 2 weeks. Increase to every other night, then every night when tolerated.
  • Use after the application of moisturizer to face to minimize irritation.
  • Use only one pea-size amount to cover the entire face. No more is needed. If instructed, a pea size amount can be used on the chest or back. This is NOT meant to be used as a spot treatment.
  • Be patient, results slowly increase with time, and it may be 2-3 months before a more noticeable change will occur.
  • Use a sunscreen SPF 30-50 every AM, as medication increases sun sensitivity.
  • Do NOT use with benzoyl peroxide products
  • If you plan to wax any hair in the area treated, you will need to stop the medication one week prior to waxing as tolerated. Threading can be done as usual with this medication.
  • Stop using if you become pregnant or during any breastfeeding time period.

At GunterMD Dermatology, we will work hard with you to achieve your desired result. Please be patient with these medications, as it takes time for your skin to adapt to these medications and for the effects to be seen. In acne, sometimes purging of the skin can occur in the initial weeks of treatment. Compliance is often the key. Please call us if you have any questions or concerns.

Pick a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB. See below for some of our favorites.

Apply sunscreen 30 minutes prior to sun exposure and reapply every few hours. Reapply with sweating or after getting out of water.

You can apply sunscreens before your moisturizer, after your moisturizer, or mixed with your moisturizer.

Sunscreens with SPF 30-50 are preferable, especially with outdoor activities.

Tell your provider if your skin seems irritated by sunscreens.
